Paint.NET x64

Website: Paint.NET

This is the 64-bit version of the popular free image editing software, Paint.NET. It's not as advanced as something like Adobe Photoshop CS3 or Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2, but it does serve well for most image editing tasks.

We used the PDNBench script to test the processing times for a range of images and filters. The multi-threaded software also takes advantage of multi-core processors quite effectively.

For more information on what the benchmark script entails, please see this thread on the Paint.NET forums.

The yellow turbo mode on the 9850 seems to have quite a significant effect on the highly threaded Paint.NET, dropping its performance by three seconds. The B2 and B3 Phenoms score linearly and according to clock speed, more than they do relate to the improve memory bandwidth. The Intel Q6600 and Q6700 quad cores still come out trumps here too but the AMD processors are only a few seconds behind. Plus, for twice the price of a Phenom X4 9850 would you save seven seconds for a Q6700? (No, you'd overclock a Q6600... I know – so would I!)

File Compression & Encryption:

Website: WinRAR

Our file compression and decompression tests were split into two halves to cover a broad spectrum of performance. The first test we ran was to compress and encrypt the MPEG-2 source file from our video encoding test with the highest quality compression ratio. Secondly, we compressed and encrypted the folder of 400 photographs used in our Photoshop Elements test with the same compression settings.

Time in Seconds (lower is better)

The average performance improvement in WinRAR multithreaded compression is quite considerable for the Phenom B3s compared to the B2s, however the 2.4GHz Phenom X4 9750 is some six seconds behind the 2.4GHz Q6600, which is then less than a second behind the Phenom X4 9850.

The yellow turbo mode on the 9850 seems to on average performance about the same as the red mode – slightly faster in large yet slightly slower in small file compression.
